US Launches Survey on Crypto Miners

Survey Launched by the U.S. Department of Energy to Examine Energy Consumption of Cryptocurrency Miners

U.S. Department of Energy Takes Action: Surveying Cryptocurrency Mining Energy Consumption

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is gearing up to initiate a survey aimed at gathering data on the energy consumption of domestic cryptocurrency mining companies. This move is a response to the escalating concerns surrounding the environmental and energy implications associated with crypto mining activities.

Rising Bitcoin Prices Spark Concerns:

The surge in Bitcoin prices, soaring by over 50% in the past three months, has triggered an increase in crypto mining activities. This notable upswing has, in turn, prompted questions about the electricity consumption associated with such mining practices. In response to these concerns, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) is poised to launch a survey to systematically collect data on the energy usage of local cryptocurrency mining companies.

U.S. Energy Agency Launches Comprehensive Survey to Scrutinize Cryptocurrency Miners’ Energy Consumption

Commencing next week, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical agency of the Department of Energy (DOE), is gearing up to conduct a provisional survey. This initiative mandates crypto miners to diligently report their energy consumption over the ensuing six months. Approved by the Office of Management and Budget in response to an emergency request, this survey is strategically designed to amass intricate details regarding the energy usage within local crypto-mining operations.

The primary goal of this survey, as articulated by EIA Administrator Joe DeCarolis, is to “specifically focus on how the energy demand for cryptocurrency mining is evolving, identify geographic areas of high growth, and quantify the sources of electricity used to meet cryptocurrency mining demand.” The collected data will play a pivotal role in comprehending and addressing the energy impact of the crypto mining industry in the United States.

U.S. Government’s Strides to Uncover Crypto-Mining Industry: A Chronicle of Legislative Action

The initiation of this survey is a pivotal component of the broader efforts by the U.S. government to gain deeper insights into the crypto-mining industry. Following China’s ban on crypto mining in 2021, the United States swiftly emerged as the global epicenter for miners seeking to relocate their operations. However, this shift raised pertinent concerns regarding energy consumption and its environmental consequences.

In response to these concerns, U.S. lawmakers convened a congressional hearing in 2022 to scrutinize the crypto mining industry, with a particular focus on energy consumption and fossil fuel emissions. Subsequently, in early 2023, Congress directed the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct an investigation into the broader impact of crypto mining activities.

To address the escalating energy consumption associated with crypto mining, U.S. President Joe Biden proposed a substantial 30% incremental tax on crypto miners’ electricity costs in 2023. The primary objective of this proposal was to actively curb mining activity within the country. This tax specifically targets Bitcoin miners, who globally consumed an estimated 121.13 terawatt-hours in 2023, reaching an unprecedented high since 2010, as per Cambridge University’s Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.

To provide context, data from 2022 reported by the International Energy Agency (IEA) revealed that Belgium consumed 93.8 terawatt-hours. The IEA anticipates a further surge in crypto mining energy consumption, projecting it to reach 160 terawatt-hours by 2026, as indicated in a report released on January 25, 2024.

Transparent Engagement

In tandem with collecting data directly from crypto miners, the U.S. government is actively encouraging public participation to gather insights into the energy use of cryptocurrency mining. Public comments addressing concerns or providing perspectives on crypto miners’ energy consumption will be collated alongside the comprehensive survey data.

This inclusive approach is a strategic move by the U.S. government to ensure that all stakeholders, including the general public, have a meaningful opportunity to contribute their valuable insights and express concerns related to the energy usage within the cryptocurrency mining industry. The engagement of a diverse range of perspectives is crucial to developing well-informed policies and strategies that address the complex dynamics of energy consumption in this evolving sector.
